Bronze Buddha statues unearthed in Da Nang

Two bronze Buddha statues and bells, gongs and lights have been excavated by workers using excavators to level gardens in Da Nang.

In the morning of April 23th, the construction workers discovered two bronze Buddha statues when they were building the belt road of South Da Nang.

A statue of sitting Mother Buddha was 55cm high, 20cm wide, and without a base. The body of the other statue was approximately 40cm. Its bronze base was 21cm in high.

The scrap collectors have discovered a bronze bell with 50 cm in diameter from the Tu Duc dynasty, a copper gong with 50cm in diameter... and then sold to the construction company.

According to Mr Tu, the discovered objects could belong to Thai Binh Temple that was destroyed and brought home for storage by his grandfather, and then disappeared. Two Buddha statues have been handed over to the new Thai Binh Temple in Hoa Hai ward.

On April 15th, the police in Hoa Hai ward (Ngu Hanh Son District, Da Nang) in cooperation with the district’s Culture – Information division encouraged people to hand over bronze artifacts, including two recently discovered Buddha statues, to competent state authorities for classification and preservation in accordance with laws.
