A ceremony held for commemoration of the passing away of Great Physician – Zen Master Tue Tinh

On March 15th, 2014 the Ministry of Health and People’s Committee of Quang Ninh province held a ceremony in Yen Tu Pagoda, Quang Ninh province to commemorate the passing away of Great Physician Zen – Master Tue Tinh. 

This ceremony aimed at honoring his thought, “Vietnam’s Herbal medicine (traditional Vietnamese medicine) to cure Vietnamese people”, developing his traditional medicine to meet the needs of Vietnamese people. 

Attending the ceremony were leaders and representatives from ministries, central agencies, Quang Ninh provincial authorities and Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, including Mrs. Nguyễn Thị Kim Tiến, Member of the Party Central Committee, Minister of Health; Mr. Phạm Dũng, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Chairman of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs, Mr. Phạm Minh Chính, Member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of the Quang Ninh provincial Party Committee, Mrs. Vũ Thị Thu Thủy, Vice – Chairman of Quang Ninh province People's Committee and leaders of departments of the province, Venerable Thích Thanh Quyết, permanent Member of the Executive Council of the VBS, Head of the Executive Board of the Quang Ninh provincial Buddhist Sangha and Buddhists from localities

At the ceremony, Minister of Health Mrs. Nguyễn Thị Kim Tiến and delegates, Buddhists reviewed the life and career of Great Physician Zen – Master Tuệ Tĩnh. His real name was Nguyễn Bá Tĩnh, alias Hồng Nghĩa with Buddhist’ name as Tuệ Tĩnh, born in Nghia Phu village, Tue Tinh commune, Cam Giang district, Hai Duong province. He laid foundation for the traditional medicine with the motto, “Vietnam’s herbal medicine to cure Vietnamese people”. He also collected the folk herbal medicines, wrote medical books and preached traditional medicines. The traditional medicine of Great Physician Tue Tinh was inherited and promoted by later generations in protecting people’s health and developing the traditional medicine.

Currently, there are 64 traditional medicine hospitals; over 80% of provincial hospitals and 90% of district hospitals have a traditional medicine departments or divisions; 30% of the total number of patients was examined and treated by or in collaboration with the traditional medicine. On this occasion, Minister Nguyễn Thị Kim Tiến launched a movement to study the medical ethics, skills of traditional physicians and the application of traditional medicines in health care.
