15-tonne dead whale washed ashore near Mui Ne

Fishermen in Binh An fishing village (Mui Ne ward, Phan Thiet city) has lately held funeral for a giant whale, weighing 15 tonnes, found dead on the offshore near Mui Ne ward on May 29th afternoon.

Trần Sáu, a local fishermen saw the carcass of 14 meters long while fishing on Wednesday about 20 nautical miles southwest of Mui Ne in Binh Thuan Province, 200 kilometers (130 miles) northeast of Ho Chi Minh City. The ship-owner informed of this to the management board of Binh An fishing village to get ready for the traditional customs.

Following traditional beliefs, Mr. Sáu and his crew stopped working and brought the whale back to mainland where it was given proper burial in Binh An fishing village

Whale worshiping is a popular customs of Vietnamese fishermen who believe that the whale's spirits will protect them on the sea. Local fishermen will always try their best to save the stranded whales and bury and worship those found dead at whale temples.
