05/13/2022

The Vietnam Buddhism Sangha Executive Council of Thua Thien-Hue province hosted a ceremony on the bank of the Huong (Perfume) River on May 8 evening to celebrate the 2566th birthday of Lord Buddha.

A ceremony to light up seven giant lotus-shaped lanterns on the bank of the Huong (Perfume) River marks the start of a cultural week to honour the Buddha's birth anniversary.

Seven lotus flowers are arranged from Phu Xuan to Da Vien bridges, symbolizing for seven steps of the Buddha. Legend has it that when the Buddha was born, he walked seven steps forward and at each step, a lotus flower blossomed under his feet.

Each lotus-shaped lantern is 4 meters high and 8 meters wide.

The 2566th birthday of the Buddha falls on the 15th day of the fourth lunar month, or May 15 this year.

The event is one of the activities towards the Hue Festival 2022 which is scheduled to take place this June.

The same day an exhibition displaying Buddhism imprints on Hanoi-based Bat Trang ceramic products is held in Thua Thien-Hue as part of the Buddhist Cultural Week.

Buddha bathing ritual is re-enacted at the exhibition.

Paintings on Buddhism are also showcased there.
