The United Nations held on May 11 a celebration for the International Day of Vesak, with the participation of Ambassadors, representatives of the UN’s member states and over 500 monks, nuns and followers around the world.
“Vesak”, the Day of the Full Moon in the month of May, is the most sacred day to millions of Buddhists around the world. The General Assembly, by its resolution 54/115 of 1999, recognized internationally the Day of Vesak to acknowledge the contribution of Buddhism to honor society and mankind.
Speaking at the event, Head of the Vietnamese delegation to the UN, Ambassador Nguyễn Phương Nga stated that the UN Vesak Day is not only a celebration of Buddha's birthday, enlightenment and nirvana, but also an opportunity to honor the Buddhist teachings. She stressed that the Buddha's teachings on the cause of human sufferings and Buddhist values could help the international community find solutions to current challenges on global peace and international security.
Ambassador Nga also shared that Buddhism has contributed to create core values of Vietnamese people and culture, and love, sharing, tolerance and harmony have been the source of strength for the Vietnamese people to overcome difficulties and challenges. Buddhism and other religions in Vietnam have coexisted in harmony and made practical contributions to socio-economic development of the country and the prosperous life and happiness for the Vietnamese people, she added.
