The University of Social Science and Humanities (USSH at Vietnam National University Hanoi) in partnership with the Institute for Global Engagement (IGE), the International Center for Law and Religion Studies (ICLRS, Brigham Young University) and Da Nang Linguistic University hosted the third ten-day certificate training program on "Religion and the Rule of Law" in Da Nang City, Vietnam, from 14-23 July 2014.
The program in Da Nang has about 70 participants from 11 provinces in the central region and Central Highlands of Vietnam. Participants consist of faith researchers, policy advisors, and government officials working on religious affairs, professors as well as Masters and Ph.D. students.
The training focuses on introducing comparative perspectives and practices on religion and the rule of law in Vietnam and other countries around the world. Contents delivered at the program includes: Approaches to religion and law, relation between religion and law, theories for studying religion and law, practical experiences solving issues relating to religion and law in several countries, achievements in implementing Vietnam’s policies on religion, experiences in building laws on religion… Program contents were delivered by well-known scholars in the field of religion and law in Vietnam and the world, including Prof. Đỗ Quang Hưng at the University of Social Science and Humanities; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Thanh Xuân, former Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Government Committee for Religious Affairs; Dr. Chris Seiple, President of the Institute for Global Engagement; Prof. Cole Durham, Director of the International Center for Law and Religion Studies (ICLRS) and Prof. Brett Scharffs, Associate Director of the ICLRS.

After completing the training program, participants will be granted a certificate on short-term religion and law training. The first-ever certificate program was conducted in Hanoi (December 2012) and the second program was conducted in Ho Chi Minh City (September 2013).
Under a MOU signed between The University of Social Science and Humanities (USSH at Vietnam National University Hanoi), the Institute for Global Engagement (IGE), the International Center for Law and Religion Studies (ICLRS, Brigham Young University) in June 2013, IGE, BYU, and USSH will continue to provide training on religion and rule of law in Vietnam in the years to come. The trainings will help establish a network of experts and scholars and provide knowledge and resources for future policy and law making on religion in the country.
