On March, 27, 2014, Pope Francis had a meeting with President Barack Obama at the Vatican. Accompanying the President included U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry and the members of the U.S delegation. President Barack Obama met with Pope Francis just in his first time on the Europe tour.
Mr. Obama came to Rome after three days of talks with EU leaders in Holland and Brussels, Belgium. “It is a great honor. I’m a great admirer, Thank you so much for receiving me.” Obama told when met the Pope in the Apostolic Palace.
The meeting lasted in nearly an hour. “He calls people around the world to stop and to think about the human dignity”, the Associated Press quoted Obama's words in an interview with the Italian daily, which was announced before the president meeting the Pope. On Wednesday, Obama said that the U.S. and EU considered about stronger sanctions against Moscow, if there was any further intrusions.
Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications & Speechwriting of the United States, Ben Rhodes, added that President Obama has been touched by the Pope's message of a culture of tolerance and equality.
Vatican Radio also gave out a hint in a article earlier that the meeting between Obama and the Pope took place "in the context of a complex phase in the relationship between the U.S. government and U.S Church." The Article continues referring to enforcement the law on health care and legalizing of gay marriage. As for the Ukraine issue, Pope Francis also appealed for dialogue. According to the Associated Press, the fact that Vatican did not mention much about this issue is an indication that the Vatican does not want to cause more tension with the Russian Orthodox Church
President Barack Obama presented Pope Francis with a box of seed used in the White House Garden for planting in the Pope’s garden in Castel Gandolfo where has been recently opened to the public.
