“In the last few hours we saw in Korea a good example of the culture of encounter,” the pontiff told thousands of people gathered in St. Peter’s square for his weekly address and blessing.

“I salute the protagonists, with a prayer that such a significant gesture will be a further step on the road to peace, not only on that peninsula, but for the good of the entire world,” he said.

Earlier Sunday, Trump became the first sitting US president to set foot in North Korea when he met the hermit nation’s leader in the DMZ between the two Koreas and both sides agreed to resume nuclear talks, which had stalled.

The pope has made many appeals for reconciliation between the two Koreas and Vatican officials have said he would consider a trip to North Korea if it would help the cause.

The pontiff has previously been critical of Trump’s policies, including his recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and migrant family separations.
