New camerlengo named for Holy Roman Church

12/24/2014

Pope Francis has named Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran the new camerlengo (chamberlain) of the Holy Roman Church.

Cardinal Tauran, 71, retains his post as president of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. He succeeds Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, who recently turned 80, as camerlengo.

The camerlengo heads the Apostolic Camera, which administers the temporal goods of the Holy See during a papal vacancy.

The camerlengo is also entrusted with certifying that the Pope is dead and sealing the Pope’s bedroom and study.

Pope Francis also named Archbishop Giampiero Gloder, the president of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, as the new vice camerlengo.

Archbishop Gloder, 56, succeeds Archbishop Pier Luigi Celata, 77, the retired secretary of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue.
