Masses of people flock to the church’s museum in San Isidoro, Spain when the book “King of the Grail” just published last week revealed that the old cup there is the one that Jesus Christ used in the last supper.
The cup was made of gold, onyx and precious stones. The cup used to belong to princess Dona Urraca, daughter of Spanish King Fernando I.
Medieval historian Margarita Torres and art history researcher Jose Manuel Ortega del Rio claim that cup as holy Chalice in the book “King of the Grail” just published last week. The historians said they identified the Spanish goblet during a three-year investigation that started with a piece of Egyptian parchment
According to the documents written in Egyptian, the cup was taken away by Muslims in Jerusalem and brought to the Christian community in Egypt. Centuries later, in around 1050, the Egyptian majesty gave it to the King of Spain as a gift to thank him for sending aid during a famine.
Gold inside, with patterns etched around the edges, the revered ornament is covered with pearls, emeralds, amethysts… Perhaps, the Egyptian king had redesigned before sending it to the new owner. Then it was kept and displayed at San Isidoro church from 1950.
Ms Torres said: 'The only chalice that could be considered the chalice of Christ is one which went via Cairo to León, and this chalice did so. 'This is a very important discovery because it helps solve a big puzzle. We believe this could be start of a wonderful stage of research.'
The film “Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade” (1989) was also based on this theory: German solders travelled to Spain during WWII believing the holy chalice was at the Montserrat Abbey near Barcelona.
This is hardly the first time a church or museum has laid claim of possessing the holy chalice. The Saint Mary of Valencia Cathedral used to claim of holding such precious cup.
