Aug 18, Colombo: The Extremist Buddhist organization in Sri Lanka, Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) has threatened to field a candidate for president at the next presidential election if the current President Mahinda Rajapaksa and other political leaders failed to accept their reforms for governance.
According to a report in local media, the group is preparing a 'comprehensive policy framework' that will be presented to President Rajapaksa soon.
General Secretary of the BBS, Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thera has told Ceylon Today that if President Rajapaksa agrees with the content and decides to carry it forward, the BBS will back him at the presidential election, otherwise the group will field its own candidate along with other nationalist organizations.
The rebel monk has reportedly dismissed the idea of a common candidate and noted that the country needs a national leader responsible for the sovereignty of the nation.
"This leader should not pander to multi-religious, multi-cultural, multi-ethnic obscenities and should understand the roots of this country, the value of the nation and to whom it rightfully belongs to," the monk was quoted as saying.
Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thera has also sought the support from the Leader of the United National Party, Ranil Wickremasinghe, Leader of the Democratic Party, Sarath Fonseka, and Leader of the National Movement for Social Justice, Ven. Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera to back their idea.
