With administration bets leading the 2019 senatorial race, an official of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines-Episcopal Commission on Prison Pastoral Care (CBCP-ECPPC) has called on the country’s would be senators to pass pieces of legislations with the welfare of the people in mind, and not just to please the president.
“The CBCP-ECPPC calls on our new senators not to pass legislations just to please the President,” Rodolfo Diamante, CBCP ECPPC, said in an interview.
“We urge them to study the bills thoroughly and determine if they will really address the problems of our country,” he added.
Diamante reminded the country’s new leaders that they have been elected by the people to work for their welfare, and not the President’s.
Among the administration senatorial bets in favor of the restoration of capital punishment in the country are former presidential political adviser Francis Tolentino and former Philippine National Police Chief Ronald Bato dela Rosa.
To note, the Catholic Church is against death penalty.
Diamante said death penalty has never been, and will never be a solution to the problems of crime.
He added that it was anti- life, anti poor and will only enhance the culture of violence that is now prevailing in our country.
The CBCP official appealed to incoming lawmakers not to give the people a “quick fix” solution to people’s problem.
Diamante added: They deserve something better.
