Buddhist sangha issues note for fighting against plastic waste
The release of 30,000 plastic lanterns to sea near Cat Bad off Hai Phong sparks environmental controversy.

The Central Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) has sent an official note asking its chapter in provinces and cities nationwide to make active response to the call for reducing plastic waste in the country.

The note dated September 6 and signed by Rev. Thích Đức Thiện, Vice President cum General Secretary of the Vietnam Buddhist church requests the executive committee of the VBS chapter in the country’s provinces and cities to encourage local Buddhist monks, nuns and followers to positively and practically respond to a recent appeal by the Vietnam Prime Minister for drastic measures to control and reduce plastic waste.

The VBS’s note asked for changes in local Buddhists’ daily behaviors in order to reduce plastic waste by using bags made of environmental-friendly materials, paper straws and food boxes made from sugarcane waste, glass products for keeping waters, etc.

In particular, the note called for a ban of plastic lanterns in Buddhist services and festivals for reducing plastic waste in rivers and seas.
