Head of Religious Affairs Committee in Can Tho Lê Hùng Yên presents certificates of recommendation to Buddhists for their outstanding contributions in social movements

The southern city of Can Tho is home to over 512,000 followers of 13 religions, accounting for 40% the municipal population, with 27 religious organizations and 387 religious places of worship.

In 2020 the municipal committee for religious affairs of Can Tho received 102 applications in the field of religion and successfully handled these applications on time, without any complaints on the handling processes, contributing to meet legitimate needs of religious organizations in aspects of legal recognition of religious worshipping places, holding of religious events and festivals, religious elections and ordainments of religious dignitaries, etc.

Implementing the Law on Belief and Religion 2016 that allows the registration of collective religious-practicing places, the executive committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS)’s chapter in Can Tho has been able to formally announce the two places for group practices of Buddhism in the city’s Binh Thuy and Vinh Thanh district. 

 Ven. Thích Bình Tâm, Deputy Head of the VBS executive committee in Can Tho informed that the establishment of places for Buddhist group practices and the legal recognition of Buddhist establishments have received the timely support and handlings of the municipal religious committee, thus bringing so much joy to local monks, nuns and lay Buddhists.

Also in 2020, the municipal religious committee in collaboration with concerning authorities in Can Tho successfully solved disputes between the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha and the Hoa Hao Buddhist Church in the city relating two worshipping places of Kim Son in O Mon District, now belonging to the VBS executive committee), and Van Phuoc in Thot Not District, presently under the Hoa Hao Buddhist executive committee.

Ven. Lê Văn Thưởng, Vice Chairman of the Central Hoa Hao Buddhist Church cum Head of the Hoa Hao Buddhist Representative Committee in Can Tho shared that the municipal religious committee of Can Tho has satisfactorily handled applications for recognition of worshipping places, and created favorable conditions for meeting needs and wishes of religious followers in the city.

In addition, as informed by the Vice Chairman of the municipal Committee for Religious Affairs of Can Tho Nguyễn Thanh Kiệt, the religious committee has also promoted exchanges and dialogues with local religious dignitaries through visits and meetings on occasions of important national religious events, in order to foster mutual understanding and timely solving religious issues and meeting legitimate needs of religious individuals and organizations.
