An event was organized by the Overseas Vietnamese Association and the Vietnamese Embassy in the Republic of Mozambique to welcome the traditional Lunar New Year (Tet) of the Dog in Maputo.

The event this year was organized earlier to create conditions for officials and staff of Movitel, health, education and agriculture experts, students and people working and living in Mozambique to meet each other before returning to the homeland to welcome Tet with their families.

Speaking at the event, Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyễn Văn Trung presented the New Year greetings of the leaders of the Party, State and Government to all members of the overseas Vietnamese community in Mozambique. He also hoped that 2018 will promise many new opportunities and successes for the Vietnamese community living and working in the East African country.

The ambassador stressed that after the difficult years of 2015-2016 due to armed conflicts, economic crisis and epidemic, since 2017, Mozambique has been at peace, its economy and society are more sustainable. The traditional and multi-faceted cooperation between the two countries continues to be strengthened and developed, especially in economic, trade and investment cooperation.

Last year, the government issued a license to establish the Buddhist Association in Mozambique headed by the Vietnamese Buddhist Association, first taking Vietnam's Buddhism to Africa, in which Mozambique is the gateway. The ambassador said that in 2018, the Vietnamese Buddhist Association will hold Great Buddha's birthday in Mozambique and officially begin construction of the first Vietnamese pagoda in Africa on a plot of over 4 hectares in Maputo.

On behalf of the Vietnamese community in Mozambique, Dr. Ngô Kim Trọng, Chairman of the Overseas Vietnamese Association in Mozambique, wished a happy New Year to the leaders of the Party, State and people and called on the overseas Vietnamese to continue to uphold good qualities of the Vietnamese people, solidarity tradition and national self-respect to maintain and protect the good image of Vietnamese people in Mozambique, contributing to fostering the friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

At the event, the participant enjoyed an art program performed by staff of Movitel, overseas Vietnamese and Mozambican friends, and traditional dishes prepared by Vietnamese restaurants in Maputo./.
