USCIRF delegation visits Vietnam

A delegation of United States Commission on International Religious Freedom led by Prof. Mary Ann Glendon visited Vietnam from August 24 to 29.

The delegation’s visit aimed to learn the religious situation as well as the drafting of a new law on belief and religion in Vietnam.

During its trip, the USCIRF delegation met with high-ranking officials of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs, the central Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Committee, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Public and Security, and visited several religious organizations in Vietnam, such as the Caodai Tay Ninh church, the Evangelical Church of Vietnam (South)… and talked with local authorities in some provinces and cities of Vietnam.

At a meeting reception held at VFF Central Committee, VFF Vice President and General Secretary Vũ Trọng Kim shared with the delegation about current religious situation in Vietnam as well as the involvement of religious organizations in society and their contributions to education and healthcare, social sponsoring, vocational training, HIV/AIDS prevention, environmental protection...

At the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Foreign Minister Hà Kim Ngọc informed USCIRF delegation of recent developments of the bilateral relation between Vietnam and the United States. He also affirmed that Vietnam always respects human rights, including the right to freedom on belief and religion, for all Vietnamese.

At a reception held at the Ministry of Public and Security, Deputy Minister Tô Lâm stressed that the Vietnamese Government has a consistent policy of respecting religious freedom, always strives to guarantee the right to belief and religion for every people, and attaches its importance to the task of ensuring religious freedom for its people in the course of innovation in Vietnam.
