On November 8-9, 2013, in Ha Long city, the northern province of Quang Ninh, the Institute of Philosophy under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences in collaboration with the Hanoi-based Vietnam Buddhist Institute under the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha held an international conference entitled “Asian and Vietnamese Buddhism in the process of promoting national culture”

Attending the conference were about 100 delegates in the country, together with the presence of Ass. Prof. Dr. Khlot Thida, President of Royal Academy of Cambodia, Personal Advisor of the Cambodian Prime Minister in charge of Cult and Religion Affairs; Prof. KhamPhon Bunnadi, Vice President of the Lao National Academy of Social Sciences; Most Venerable Shiue Hwa Chung, Head of the Academy of Buddhist Tripitaka; Prof. Lewis Lancaster (University of California, Berkeley; University of West, Los Angeles) of the United States and representatives from countries and territories, such as Thailand, the Republic of Korea, Japan and Taiwan,… The conference also saw representatives from the Department of Buddhist Affairs of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Xuân Thắng, member of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, President of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences delivered the opening speech at the conference. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phạm Minh Chính, member of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, Secretary of the Quang Ninh provincial Party Committee, and Most Venerable Thích Đức Nghiệp, Vice President of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, delivered welcome speeches.

The conference heard an introductory report presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phạm Văn Đức, head of the Institute of Philosophy. During the event, there were two plenary sessions and four symposia.

The first plenary session was chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trần Đức Cường and Most Venerable Thích Đức Nghiệp with four presentations of international scholars and two of local scholars. The second one, chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phạm Văn Đức, Most Venerable Thích Thanh Nhiễu and Shiue Hwa Chung, heard two reports by domestic scholars and five others by international scholars.

The four symposia included “Buddhism and Culture” co-chaired by Most Venerable Thích Trí Quảng and Prof. Dr. Thái Kim Lan; “Buddhism in the Ly and Tran Dynasties” co-chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trần Đức Cường, Most Venerable Thích Thanh Quyết, and Dr. Nguyễn Quốc Tuấn; “Buddhism and some problems of modern society” co-chaired by Most Venerable Thích Quảng Tùng and Prof. Dr. Trần Văn Đoàn; and “Buddhism and Culture” co-chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoàng Minh Đô and Shiue Hwa Chung./.
