Exhibition on Bru-Vân Kiều in Hanoi
The exhibition attracts a great deal of public attention

An exhibition entitled "Deities, Ancestors and Shamans: The Bru-Vân Kiêu in the Truong Son cordillera" was opened on October 12 in the Vietnam Museum of Ethnography in Hanoi.

The event was organized by the Hungarian Embassy in Hanoi in partnership with the museum.

The exhibition is showing about 70 shots about the daily life of a Vietnamese mountain ethnic group, the Bru (in Vietnamese as Vân Kiêu) by Prof. Vargyas Gábor from Hungary. These photos were taken from 1985 to 1989, when the scholar lived with the ethnic community.

Professor Vargyas Gábor speaks at the opening ceremony of the exhibition

Bru-Vân Kiêu is among the 54 recognized national ethnic groups in Vietnam. The ethnic community concentrates on mountainous areas of the central provinces of Quang Tri and Quang Binh, along the border between Laos and Vietnam. The Bru language belongs to the Mon-Khmer language group.

On the occasion, the Hungarian professor also released the book “Bất chấp định mệnh: Văn hóa và phong tục người Bru-Vân Kiều (In spite of destiny: culture and customs of Bru-Vân Kiêu). This is his first book about the ethnic group in Vietnamese.

The exhibition will run until January 31, 2019.
